Yesterday, I read the story of Asa, king of Judah, in 2 Chronicles 14−−16. I like reading about the kings in the Old Testament, because their lives so clearly show the long-term consequences of obedience and disobedience to God. Their stories also show the impact of one generation upon another as sons follow in the footsteps of their fathers or choose to go in another path.

The first thing that caught my attention is that during part of Asa’s reign, “the land had rest.” The writer of 2 Chronicles hammers this point, starting Asa’s story thus in chapter 14:

Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David. And Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days the land had rest for ten years. And Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God. He took away the foreign altars and the high places and broke down the pillars and cut down the Asherim and commanded Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, and to keep the law and the commandment. He also took out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the incense altars. And the kingdom had rest under him. He built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest. He had no war in those years, for the Lord gave him peace. And he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, gates and bars. The land is still ours, because we have sought the Lord our God. We have sought him, and he has given us peace on every side.” So they built and prospered.

In seven verses, rest and peace are mentioned five times; this suggests to me that Asa’s story and actions contain a key to living in rest and peace. read the complete post

As I was writing “helping your soul to rest in peace,” I remembered the words of a hymn by Charles Wesley, based on Hebrews 3 and 4; I know it from a recording by worship leader Craig Smith. The lyrics are beautiful and worth meditating on:

Lord I believe in a rest that remains
To all Thy people known
A rest where pure enjoyment reigns
And Thou art loved alone
A rest where all our souls’ desire
Is fixed on the things above
Where doubt and pain and fear expire
Cast out by perfect love

Remove this hardness from my heart
This unbelief remove
To me the rest of faith impart
The sabbath of Thy love
Safe in the way of life, above
Death, earth, and hell we rise
We find when perfected, perfected by love
Our long-sought paradise

Come O my Saviour come away
Into my soul descend
No longer from Thy creature stay
My author and my end
Come Father, Son and Holy Ghost
And seal we Thine abode
Let all that I am in Thee be lost
Let all be lost in my God

helping your soul to rest in peace

One of the aspects of The Little Book of Hours that I like best is that the morning and evening prayers end with this:

May the souls of the faithful by the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

This repetition of “rest in peace” was one of the first things that caught my attention when I started using the prayer book several years ago. Growing up, the only time I heard “rest in peace” was in regard to gravestones, so I wondered why this prayer was a a regular feature. I concluded that while the original intent of the prayer may have been for the “dearly departed,” I was going to speak it as a prayer for myself and my family…

God’s work-rest rhythm

February 21, 2006

Benny Tabalujan makes a compelling argument for honoring the sabbath in “Re-discovering Sabbath” in the most recent issue of Regent Business Review. Tabalujan explains that sabbath is not so much about resting as reflecting:

God used the sabbath to look over, reflect upon, enjoy and celebrate the work he performed. It follows that if work is about results, then sabbath is about reflection; if work is preoccupied with mission, then sabbath delves into meaning.…
