“Jesus, I am resting, resting”

in meditations

I was listening to the Martins today singing “Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting,” and I heard the lyrics in a way I had not before.

Jesus, I am resting, resting,
In the joy of what Thou art.

What a beautiful thought! And it seems to grow in magnitude as I continue to contemplate it. These first two lines provoke a number of questions for me: “What is Jesus?” (Note that it’s not who is Jesus.) And why does this bring joy? And how does it enable me to rest?

Perhaps I’m thinking too much–in fact, it’s very likely. As the rest of the song shows, it’s all about letting His beauty “fill my soul.” I will be listening to this song more in the coming days and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal to me the truths that it contains.
