The October Enjoying Everyday Life (from Joyce Meyer Ministries) has an article on the faith of Christopher Columbus. It includes some amazing quotes from Columbus:
It was the Lord who put into my mind the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because he comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures.
Vincent Newfield, the author of the article, makes clear that Columbus believed he was called by God to take the gospel to the nations; one of Columbus’ favorite passages was Isaiah 49:1 and 6:
hear this, you distant nations:
Before I was born the LORD called me;
from my birth he has made mention of my name…
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.
The final quotation included in the article is my favorite:
No one should fear to understake any task in the name of our Savior, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service. The working out of all things has been assigned to each person by our Lord, but it all happens according to His sovereign will.
Charis means grace, and that’s what this blog is about: grace, in all its—sometimes messy, always magnificent—manifestations. I’m Dan Butcher, and I invite you to join me in learning to lead a Christ-centered, grace-filled life.
