I was listening to the Martins today singing “Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting,” and I heard the lyrics in a way I had not before.
Jesus, I am resting, resting,
In the joy of what Thou art.
What a beautiful thought! And it seems to grow in magnitude as I continue to contemplate it. These first two lines provoke a number of questions for me: “What is Jesus?” (Note that it’s not who is Jesus.) And why does this bring joy? And how does it enable me to rest?
Perhaps I’m thinking too much — in fact, it’s very likely. As the rest of the song shows, it’s all about letting His beauty “fill my soul.” I will be listening to this song more in the coming days and asking the Holy Spirit to reveal to me the truths that it contains.
